The mission of AMIGOS is to build partnerships to empower young leaders, advance community development and strengthen multi-cultural understanding in the Americas.
Each year about 700 Amigos volunteers from around the country spend four, six or eight weeks in host countries working on different community health, community development and youth-to-youth projects. In 2006 Amigos partnered with host agencies in Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Throughout the school year, the Boston Chapter prepares its volunteers for their Latin American experience through training in cross-cultural sensitivity, team building, technical skills, personal health and safety, and the culture of Latin America. In June, volunteers travel to their assigned countries. Once in country, volunteers join with volunteers from other chapters throughout the United States. Volunteers are then placed, in partnerships of two to four, in rural or semi-rural communities of their host country to live for the summer.
Life-long friendships have been built between AMIGOS volunteers and their adopted communities. Thousands of young people have learned invaluable lessons about cultural differences, community service, and their own ability to lead.
